Discussion: This study, the first to evaluate the risk of macro-textured breast implants from a prospective database with long term follow-up, demonstrates that the incidence rate of BIA-ALCL may be higher than previously reported. BIA-ALCL occurs most frequently in patients who have breast implants with textured surfaces. This is a cancer of the immune system, not a type of breast cancer. The current lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL is estimated to be 1:2,207-1:86,029 for women with textured implants based upon current confirmed cases and textured implant sales data over the past two decades. BIA-ALCL is caused by the textured shell of the implants, regardless of whether they are silicone or saline-filled.

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma BIA

This is a cancer of the immune system, not a type of breast cancer. BIA-ALCL is referred to as a T-cell lymphoma because T-cells are the first part of the immune system it affects.

When a woman develops BIA-ALCL, it means that a T-cell has become abnormal. BIA-ALCL typically occurs in the scar tissue capsule or fluid that surrounds the implant. In some cases, BIA-ALCL can spread throughout the body. Different types of cancers are grouped together based on where in the body they began. Lymphomas like BIA-ALCL begin in cells that make up the immune system. Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is an uncommon and highly treatable type of lymphoma that can develop around breast implants.
